FAQs

THERE ARE LOTS OF TERMS USED FOR GOLD JEWELLERY, WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

Gold Vermeil - a minimum of 2.5 microns of usually 18 karat gold plated using electrolysis over Sterling Silver. Used a lot on curved surfaces.

Gold Fill - a minimum of 5% total weight in gold, usually 14 karat gold, laid in multiple strips usually on flat surfaces.

Gold Plate - a thin coating of gold. As a comparison it would be a tenth of the weight in gold of a gold fill.

Faux Gold - sometimes refered to as composite gold leaf, this is an imitation gold alloy created by blending copper, brass and zinc.

Gold Coloured - a painted representation of gold.

WHERE ARE OUR PRODUCTS MADE?

All of our ceramic products are ethically and sustainably handmade by the Habulous team, led by Nicky in our Dartmoor studio. Each piece is either individually thrown or hand-shaped and then, depending on the piece, stamped by the maker (the small initials on the piece will tell you which member of our team made it). Next, we bisque fire, setting the clay in its form, before glazing or painting and firing for a final time, creating the finished product. Here at Habulous we are all passionate about the wellbeing of the environment, therefore we aim to make as many of our products as sustainable as possible, although at this early stage of our brand development, we have to make a few exceptions to make our production more affordable as we are still a small business.

Below we have listed the details of some of our products so that you are aware of our sources:

  • The sterling silver elements of our handmade jewellery are sourced from British companies who import from other countries
  • Our cards are printed in the UK on FSC card which supports sustainable forests, individually wrapped in biodegradable starch cello packets
  • The wax melts are handmade in our Dartmoor home and the burners we stock (excluding our own Shoreline Series burners) are currently sourced from around the world.

WHO MAKES OUR PRODUCTS?

We all could have a hand in your final product, it could be Nicky, Paul, Ellie or Cara or a combination. Our ethos is that we stand for Brish made thoughtfully desinged work that is full of character, created to stand the test of time and to discourage the populace from a throw away society.

HOW LONG DO PRE-ORDERS TAKE?

Everything we make we offer a pre-order service on when we are out of stock. On receipt of your order we will get to work, the making process can be lengthy so please allow up to 3 weeks before dispatch (rare occassions may be longer, will contact to see if you'd like to pursue).

HOW DO I SAFELY PACKAGE CERAMICS FOR SAFE RETURN?

Hopefully, you should be able to reuse the initial packaging for your return, as not only is this good for the environment, it also saves you having to find anymore suitable packaging. The most important thing is that nothing is touching; what we mean by this is that if there are multiple ceramic pieces, make sure they are carefully seperated by protective wrapping and that the items are not touching the walls of the parcel box but are instead cushioned around the whole piece. We use corn starch packing chips (which are biodegradable, so if you have any spare you can simply dissolve these in boiling water, handy, right?) and cardboard dividers as we have found these the most sustainable and effective for protection. For additional information on how to package your piece/s safely, please see our packaging advice video and blogpost...and if you have any other queries don't hesitate to get in touch.

WHY SHOULD I BUY HANDMADE?

Buying handmade is great for a number of reasons. Genuine time, care and love goes into each piece, compared to large-scale companies that simply mass-produce identical products with machinery. The beauty of handmade work is that no piece is ever the same, which makes every item unique and therefore more personal to you. As artists make up the foundations of Habulous, it means a great deal to us when you choose to support our business as it makes the consistent hard work and creativity that we put into every single piece absolutely worth it.

Handmade products are much more sustainable as, here at Habulous, we don't use any processes that are harmful to the environment or the team. We make sure all work is carried out safely and securely in our studio - trust us, it's a small space that has meant we've learnt how to do things EXTRA carefully. Moreover, our workforce is supported fairly and maintaining our team's wellbeing is our number one priority, which we believe is also evident in the quality, care and thought put into our handmade products.
